Chapter 14

Tobias Finch

I don’t think I’ve ever been anywhere as hot as this place. And that’s saying a lot, because New York summers are notorious.

Also, this little town in the middle of nowhere in Utah makes Buffalo look like a thriving metropolis. As far as I can tell, the only purpose of this place is to serve as a base for people to visit Capitol Reef, one of the least visited National Parks in the country.

Hidden gem. That is what they are calling it.

Well, it’s hidden alright.

As I survey the landscape surrounding Hanksville, I can easily imagine dragons living here. Or at least, dragon shifters.

“Roll the window back up,” Red complains from the front passenger seat. “It’s hot as balls out there.”

Orrin gives an answering chuckle from the driver’s seat before taking a bite of one of the venison meat-sticks he insisted on carting with him from Wyoming.

Reluctantly, I roll up the window, letting the stifling air from the truck’s air-conditioning unit cool the cramped space. I wrinkle my nose at the stale scent of shifter-sweat, meat-sticks, fast-food containers and soda. Beside me, Jason squirms in the middle seat. His obvious discomfort yet again reminding me to feel guilty about having a window seat.

I had offered to trade with him, but he refused, looking meaningfully at Cody. Cody, who is currently staring out the other window, maintaining his sulky silence. Cody, who has barely spoken two words to me since we left pack territory.

I guess Jason feels like he needs to be physical a barrier between us.

It’s easy enough to find the motel, since it’s one of a handful of little buildings scattered like blocks in the endless dusty terrain.

“Doesn’t look like much,” Cody comments as he climbs out of the truck, frowning dubiously at the motel before pausing to stretch. He pulls out his phone, tapping out a quick text, then slips it back into his pocket.

“Everything okay with the site?” I ask, assuming he’s messaging one of the contractors.

I might have been a bit slack on the whole getting our pack buildings built thing, but I want to make up for it now. Make sure he knows that he doesn’t have to do everything on his own.

He looks at me blankly for a moment before giving me a curt nod, then turns his back to me.

I sigh as Jason looks anxiously between me and Cody.

At least I tried, right?

“Let’s get our bags inside,” Orrin suggests. “Shouldn’t linger out in the open too long. Never know who could drive past.”

I look at the road outside the motel and the near empty parking lot, then quirk a brow at him. Still, I do as he suggests because I can feel the heat radiating up from the asphalt, as if it’s trying to cook me alive through my shoes.

I raise my fist to knock on the door of room nine, only to have Hamish fling it open, his eyes squinting against the afternoon sun as he looks us over and ushers us in.
